The Dabbawalas

The famous dabbawalas of Mumbai are getting near of becoming a techno savvy businessman. After the successful launch of their web-site Mydabbawala.com , they are getting into the Cell phones launching an SMS service recently for customers who need to order their service via text message. I didnt know that they have a web-site of their own, until now.

Their precise and system of delivering hot home-cooked meals over 2 lakh office-goers in Mumbai has drawn praise from all over the world including Bschools who wanna study their system and their mode of operation. Oh yeah dont be surprised if you see students from Harvard or them IIMs working behind understanding the concept. Much like the did in trying to understand Laloo Prasad...

Claustrophobic in the T

claus·tro·pho·bic(klô'strə-fō'bĭk) adj - Relating to or suffering from claustrophobia, Uncomfortably closed or hemmed in.

And T refers to the Boston local train service much like El (L) in Chicago.

So, the hot Summer Sun burning down all day long were pouring those IR rays into Earths atmosphere. And after all the hours put at work, walking through the park was "The Moment" of the evening, for what the "T" had in store was an experience.

Haven't gotten used to AC and infact even though I have one fitted in my apt, barely use it. One thing I realised today though, was that it is a must in any public transport. For pumping the air out, if not for the Conditioned Air it provides.

Jam packed train travel is usual @ or after 5 pm. 6 Pm makes it far difficult so decided to board the train anyways ... thereby going against my usual of skipping 1 or 2 trains and waiting for the rush to subside. Luckily I stood by the door but as soon as it closed, realised that the compartment doesn't have a working AC . It was freaking hot inside as if the oven outside was not enough.

Air inside the bogie smelled awful to say the least. It smelled of breathing people, Mc Donald fries, KFC barbeque chicken sause and a mixture of some other um ... smell ... . I tried my best to concentrate on my God of small things but all in vain. The nostril size grew with the body reacting, giving all its got to extract some Oxygen from the otherwise CO2 filled closed-space.

People going against the regular ... using their mouth to exhale instead, just pumped in more and more CO2 causing a local warming. As and when the train stopped, I would get out to grab a fresh breath (or maybe more) of air - one of the advantages of standing adjacent to the door. Although it was the air inside the tunnel I was inhaling- it was bliss. Running into another compartment was on cards but an Engineering guess - it would be the same everywhere- stopped me from.

So, got down at Charles MGH, MIT, Central Sq., Harvard, Porter Sq.,Davis Sq. and to my final destination Alewife. Tell you - I was concentrating more on the station count than the pages I flipped. Each time people getting out talking to themselves "Dont you have to get down now" ? For which I answered each time - No .. gotta huff and puff all the way till the last stop. And dont smile just cause you got a sigh of relief, I know I would have the last laugh... :D

One of the gifted few to laugh the last .... @ the last stop.

What's playing ?

Have been listening to some XM radio lately and must say that they have a good collection and they make sure that the latest and the bestest is played.

So am hooked to the new one by TOOL - 10,000 days and HINDER.

Have you heard Hinder's new album ? Its called Extreme Behavior. Coupla songs that I luved were "Stoned" and "Lips of an Angel". A tinge of Nickelback could be heard if listened carefully but all in all its Asuperb.

Coming back to my other love TOOL, their new album 10,000 days is cooooool. Much like their previous creations like Ænima, Lateralus this one rocks. Maynard and his band .. well what can I say ?

The importance of MUTE while watching world cup matches

I admit that the button I use least on my TV remote is the MUTE Button - Just Once. And I do that when I start listening to the senseless commentary by american commentators. No hard feelings but you guys aren't doing a good job and it doesnt make things easier when the comments are always PRO - USA even if they are not playing.

So, early morning game Ghana vs Czec, it started with these 2 guys talking about the importance of the game because US had lost to Czec, and how a Ghana win would improve their chances. I was flabbergasted by the stoopid comments that they were able to come up with. They were more happy than the Ghanaians, I bet they would be dancing up and down in the studio after the match (b/c Ghana won). They say that if the african nation can do it - so can the States. I mean come on dude, if A does something B can also do that ???

Lack of knowledge --

Any match you watch - the topic of US and its performance in the worldcup and stuff is brought up. I mean why ? No, frankly - do I f$$$ing care ? Agreed that in games like cricket we do hear the same but then we also have someone from the other team and guys from other parts of the world giving their analysis. Out here its always USA USA USA ...

Ha funny, a friend tells me that the 1-2 tackle attempted in the soccer field the other day was compared with what is done against Shaq in NBA !!! Ya take that .. and then a comparison with baseball. Can you listen to stuff like Totti or Gerrard being compared with some NYY player or Heats players for that matter ~ sigh!!

As it is, I am not able to watch the games on week-days. On week-ends the 4-5 matches, with this blah blah blah going on ... gets on the nerves. But gotta tolerate this in many more matches to come. I hope that States dont reach the 2nd round. Atleast they would learn to talk something !!

FUBAR Friday

It was a Casual friday, casual in the sense that bit of a relaxation from the constrictions of a dress code (or formal wear). I had sensed it thursday night itself that tomorrow is gonna be a FUBAR Friday. What else could I expect, receive an email at 12 in the night Thursday which was expecting me to reach work at so and so time (early I.E) then the struggle out there as if there was no tomorrow ~ sigh.
The climate outside was asuperb. Pleasant 60s and was in the mood to enjoy every moment of it, but by the time I wrapped up everything it was late already. Watched them Cows back to my long walk to the T stop and there goes my TGIF. A danger of reporting again on Saturday exists am waiting for that to be resolved right now.
By the End of Day I was in the mood to listen to "No Excuses" by Alice in Chains ...
It's okay
Had a bad day
Hands are bruised from breaking rocks all day
Drained and blue
I bleed for you
You think it's funny well you're drowning in it too

Sacred Cows ?

Now, they say "Holy Cow" but its Aghanya for us and well needless to say - sacred.

Its been almost a week now, see the life sized cows on my way to work AM and PM. Did some research today and turns out that it's actually part of an international art project called "cow parade". Over 100 life-size , painted cows are on display throughout the city and every once in a while you could see tourists and residents use their camera to get a snap. Have seen guys pose in front of those sculptures too, lol.

It would be on display until Sept 5 and after that, they will be auctioned and the proceeds will benefit The Jimmy Fund - supporting cancer research. Atleast, something for a good cause . A detailed list and a map could be found here. Care to buy one? Its an Auction so you could very well guess the $$.On another note - I did go whack whack today only to find the person on the other end of the ph. giggle ;). And sigh ~ Turns out no more TWIX for me, replaced by some crazy gum or something.

Gmail, Orkut and Donuts

It was a good concept that Google came up with, Gmail. Agreed that its different from other email providers, with all the Stars, Labels, Chat-integration and the Mailbox size that keeps on increasing [2734.1515 MB now]. The one thing that I dont like (wont say hate ... allright ?) is the way it clubs together all my emails with same subject/from the same sender.

I didnt pay an attention until now, login to my account to see a thread as big as 16 emails, then another one - 13, 9,7 etc . Now, I understand what they are trying to do out here but whenever one replies to your email, its automatically threaded so even if you reach 16 or 13, you still can scroll down to see the previous ones. Why then this clubbing business ?? Anyone thought about it ?

Unable to create folders is something that I have learned to live with,by accepting what they call the "Labels" . hmm but this thing... aint that gud !!

Also, Orkut has started the donut business again. Something that I experienced quite a while back here. It is pretty good now-a-days, I remember with the Brazilians pounding the server some time back, it was horrible. Heard that the fever has hit India now. Let see whether the servers can handle the pounding done by our teen population ;-)

Made us Crazy ? Who ?

Watched this Hindi movie yesterday "Humko Deewana Kar Gaye" . Not much of a star-studded cast but had some good performances from Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu et al.

Pretty decent movie, something different as far as storyline goes. Katrina Kafi looked gorgeous, or if I go back some years and consider myself to be a college student back in India, then we'd say amongst us that she was a Bomb ;)

Though, she's not done much of an acting in Bollywood, I guess its a good start. The movie I guess is decent and worth watching - once. hmm I'd give it a Three ***

Dont Whack me okay ?

Its not unusual to hear the Whack sound often. Nothing to do with the verb Whack but its still funny.

So I overhear this Systems admin at work today, setting up some apploication over phone, was helping out someone actually. Most of the conversation was not audible but in between hear this distinctive "whack, whack". Lol, cant tell you how funny it sounded. Not that I'm hearing this the first time, but probably the way he was utterring, made it sound funny.

If you havent come across this, whack is a lingo used for forward-slash. So, its not unusual to pronouce c:/windows/system32 as "c colon whack windows whack system32"; lol or something like "http colon whack whack dub dub dub microsoft dot com whack partners". Whack partners eh? Lol ... dub dub dub is a lingo used for www. I've also heard people say dubya dubya dubya, triple w, triple dub etc..etc..

Also used are backwhack (backslash), bang or smash or wham(exclamation), hashbang, shebang, splat bang all refer to(#!).

So next time you hear someone go "whach, whack" try not to look astonished :D

Slayer ,666 and The Number of the Beast

They claim that 6.6.06 isn't a date that comes around very often. There's lots and lots to say, I wont get started, here.

Here's an official statement from guys who celebrated NDOS, short for National Day of Slayer. Yeah they decided that it would be a perfect day for them to get together and engage in - Listening to Slayer. WoW !!!

Official Statement on Participation

  • Listen to Slayer at full blast in your car.
  • Listen to Slayer at full blast in your home.
  • Listen to Slayer at full blast at your place of employment.
  • Listen to Slayer at full blast in any public place you prefer.

DO NOT use headphones! The objective of this day is for everyone within earshot to understand that it is the National Day of Slayer. National holidays in America aren't just about celebrating; they're about forcing it upon non-participants.

  • Digging some more, I found out that Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobics are people who are afraid of 666 because of its biblical associations with Satan. And actually even the Church of Satan doesn't see the number six as some harbinger of Armageddon.

Well, I'm tuning into some Iron Maiden today (though its a day late, I gotta listen to The Number of the Beast and Fear of the Dark) and some Slayer, full blast if possible ;-). Six is really, well, just a number.

    Where's our Mojo ?

US Open 2005: Andy Roddick, american stud, appears in one of the most insipid tennis inspired commercial for Amex. Punchline was something like "Where's Andy's Mojo" (or something like that - I dont remember). And boy did he lose his Mojo out there on court. As it is I dont like that guy, and this Ad campaign did it. Kicked out in the 1st round itself - I think his Mojo made it further that Andy did.

US Open 2005: Maria Sharapova, on an court intw. after defeating Nadia Petrova : "My Mojo wasn't there." Mojo eh ? Some influence maybe, too much of TV , or maybe something else ;-)

French Open 2006: Andy Roddick. Same saga, retired from the 1st round at Roland Garos, and was 2 sets down, a mental retirement maybe. I am not sure if he's gonna find his Mojo anymore. So much for the hype created in the States.

French Open 2006: Maria Sharapova. The 4th seed was defeated by fellow 14th seeded Safina. Saw the game the other day and looked like it was the Mojo again. Sharapova was leading 5-1 in the final set and went on to lose the last 6 games to be knocked out by Marat Safin's sister. A good comeback by Safina and all the grunting by Maria on court didnt help.

The saga of Andy, Mojo, and Maria continues. Next pit stop - Wimbledon

    The Matrix Triology

This may look like a devellish ploy but it is one way to bring the perseverance to an end ..
Sitting on the couch yesterday and watching Matrix I, II for the (Umpteen+1)th time, it crossed my mind - How many times can I watch this ? Am unable to find an answer but considering the fact that I've already seen this an Umpteen +1 times, it could very well be a multiple of the same.

Now, we may not be able to dodge bullets or land safely jumping from a highriser but tell you this - we all are plugged in. Into what ? Plugged into the Matrix. The world that exists as mere screens. TV screens, computer screens, LCD screens - mere screens. The only difference is that Neo was plugged in physically through an attachment on the back of his head. We, on the other hand, are plugged in using gadgets like Cell phones, PDAs, Wireless, Laptops, TVs, Cameras, Navigations and what not. Slow but steady we are approaching what was depicted in MATRIX I,II,III.

Now-a-days if you see a person walking and plugged into a earpiece, you start thinking - wait a minute which gadget could it be ? An Ipod, Cell phone hands free or a hearing aid or something else ?? By the time you'd guess that he would be talking, smiling .. his words beamed as airwaves upto a nearby cell phone tower, to a satellite and back to Earth to some place in the other side of the Globe !!
What happens early morning ? Switch on the computer before even pursuing the daily routines, check emails, offlines, scraps and craps, blogs, tune into Radio - full blast, Itunes, Launchcast, IM, AIM, Sametime, Blackberry, TV ... sigh the list never ends!! In todays world (of a simulation of the MATRIX) our brains are instantly wired to other peoples brains thereby skipping the activity of talking, listening etc ... and we are content to leave people a messg. for when they wake up .
Can we now magine a world without emails, he he ....why do I ask right ? How many times a day do you check emails ? Forget it, dont even bother to answer that -you'd hang yourselves !! Some 20 years ago - people did not realise that they were in the MATRIX. Its only when the internet revolution kicked off in the mid 90s while we were in high school that people realised the importance of Tuning in. Tuning in to the MATRIX.
You can get an IM even while you are asleep and they collect them for you to be relayed while you tune in the next time. Your cell phone vibrates signalling the arrival of someone's brain that wants to talk to you the VERY MOMENT. High speed interenet connection lets you stay in touch with ur friends, send Smileys and Audibles even while you are at the airport, on a Bus or anywhere in the world.

Tell you - the MATRIX has gotten you !! Everyday life is not what it was 20 years back. Ask your dad and mom for further clarification. Yeah go ahead and use the cell phone . Or Chat on Yahoo or do whatever you do to talk to them ;-)
Because while you would be resting your body tonight trying to get 8 hours of Sunday sleep - your cell phone would collect voicemails, Inbox would collect emails from friends and foes, Your online buddies would bombard you with IMs awaiting your return. Your friends would crap/scrap in your scrapbooks, your Blog friends would shout and comment on your posts. You would then be startled in the morning by that Alarm (which you dont wanna snooze) only to get PLUGGED IN. You are now desperate to get connected to the E-world. As soon as you can. The E-world --- we would know in the future as THE MATRIX.

Twix my favorite - atleast for now ;)

Vending machines at workplace are a topic of debate, always. Starting from gum to chips to cookies to soda to candies they've got it all to let you keep munching during office hours.

The charges are ridiculous, however. 2 times, 3 times is that what they charge? Damn! So yesterday afternoon, get this craving to munch a candy. Dunno why I picked TWIX, but TWIX it was. Inserted a $ bill and its supposed to return me 30c. To my surprise, find 45c being returned, surprised 'cause they dont make such mistakes.

So today again, a general human tendency to find out whether yesterday was just a mere conicidence found myself inserting a $ bill and voila again the same deal. Oh yeah TWIX is on sale out there. he he .. crazy me, getting happy as if I've found kryptonite and writing a blog entry out here.

Whatever, for now TWIX is my fav. atleast till the next inventory ;-)
