Around the world on the 1st day

January 1 2006, All over the world : The 1st day was welcomed in a different fashion around the world. Some highlights below --

@ New York - Some say hundreds, others say thousands but I guess Millions of people would have gathered at the Times Square to watch the famous crystal ball drop. Sigh !! I had difficult times walking on X-mas out there; can't imagine how it would have been on New Years eve !!
@ London - Even though a subway strike was called (as if that helped), Londoners welcomed New Year with great zest and happiness.
@ Japan - Heard that some people climbed a snow covered mountain (Mt. Fuji) to see the first sunrise of 2006. Land of the rising Sun eh?
@ Boston - More than a Million people gathered at various locations in the city to celebrate. Boston Commons witnessed the maximum gathering we had some Fireworks and Jazz bands perform.
@ L.A - Due to safety concerns a concert party, that would have drawn more than 20000 people was cancelled - hours before the scheduled start.
@ France - Youths burned ( yes torched !!) about 400 cars in the so-called 'traditional New year vandalism' but a riot was dodged ... else the world would have witnessed something similar to the one that broke out in 2005 fall.
@ American Soldiers in Iraq - They were shown a special show from American idol singer Diana DeGarmo at Camp Victory in Baghdad !! Wow !!
@ Rio de Janeiro - Thousands of Brazillians jumped into the Rio de Janerio's famed Beach - The Copacabana and witnessed the largest firework display in the city's history - about 25 tons of Fireworks set to flames.
@ Providence - Where I was .... Superb display of fireworks ... Snow flakes, that later turned into pretty heavy snow, playing its part welcoming the Year 2006.
